Entry Requirements for United Kingdom

Everything you need to know before travelling to the United Kingdom UK flag

Overview

Before You Travel to United Kingdom

The United Kingdom operates its own independent border and immigration system. Entry requirements vary according to your nationality, the purpose and length of your visit, and recent policy changes.

Use this guide to ensure your documentation is complete and your travel preparations are fully in order before your trip. Our team is also available to answer any specific questions regarding your individual circumstances.

Passport Requirements

Your passport must meet the following minimum requirements to be accepted at UK border control. Travelling without a valid and compliant passport may result in being refused boarding by your airline or denied entry at the UK border.

Visa Application Guide
Validity

Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the UK. Unlike some other countries, the UK does not require 6 months of validity beyond your travel dates.

Blank Pages

You must have at least one completely blank page for entry stamps. Border Force officers will refuse entry if no blank pages are available.

Machine-Readable

A machine-readable biometric passport (with the chip symbol on the cover) is strongly recommended and required for eGate use at major UK airports.

Children Under 18

Every child must travel on their own individual passport. Children travelling without both parents may be asked to provide a letter of consent from the non-travelling parent.

Health

Health Requirements

The UK currently has no mandatory vaccination requirements for entry. However, we strongly recommend thorough health preparation before any international trip.

There are currently no mandatory vaccination requirements to enter the United Kingdom for any nationality. However, if you intend to use NHS healthcare services or have a pre-existing medical condition, ensure you have adequate travel health insurance.

Travel health insurance is not legally required but is very strongly recommended. A single emergency hospital visit in the UK can cost thousands of pounds without insurance. Ensure your policy covers medical treatment, emergency repatriation, personal liability and trip cancellation.

You can bring prescription medicines for personal use. Carry medicines in their original packaging with a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor. Some controlled substances require a personal licence from the UK Home Office if bringing more than 3 months supply.

There are strict rules on bringing meat, dairy and plant products from outside Great Britain. Most personal food items from within the EU can be brought in. Products from non-EU countries are subject to restrictions. Check the HMRC and DEFRA guidelines before travelling.
