About This Tour

Historical England — Full Overview

England is a living museum — a landscape layered with 5,000 years of continuous human civilisation, from the Neolithic farmers who raised Stonehenge to the medieval masons who built the great cathedrals, the Roman legions who constructed an entire city at Bath and the Georgian architects who created one of Europe's most beautiful urban landscapes. The Historical England tour takes you through all of it.

Your journey begins at Avebury — the largest prehistoric stone circle in the world, which most visitors overlook in favour of the more famous Stonehenge. Walking among these vast, ancient stones, which the village has grown up around over the millennia, is an extraordinary experience. The following dawn brings exclusive early-access entry to the Stonehenge Stone Circle — getting inside the monument before the general public opens is one of the most remarkable experiences in England.

The Roman city of Bath is one of the most perfectly preserved cities in Europe — a masterpiece of Georgian urban planning built over the remains of the Roman settlement of Aquae Sulis. The Roman Baths, where visitors have sought the healing waters for 2,000 years, are one of the finest Roman remains in northern Europe. The Royal Crescent, the Circus and the Pump Room complete a city of exceptional beauty.

The journey concludes at Oxford, where 38 colleges have been educating the world's leaders, scientists and writers for over 900 years. Your guide brings the university's extraordinary history to life as you walk through the medieval lanes, the Bodleian Library — one of the oldest in Europe — and the magnificent Christ Church Great Hall, familiar to millions as Hogwarts' Great Hall. Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Winston Churchill and one of England's greatest baroque buildings, provides a magnificent finale to four extraordinary days.
